Pressworks

FAQ

The ones we actually get, and a few nobody asks out loud but everybody wonders.

What you are purchasing

Is it a runnable app?

No. It is the view layer: pages, styles, assets. You keep your controllers, your data and your build. Nothing here runs on its own and nothing asks you to clone a repository.

What actually lands in my project?

A folder of pages in the format you chose, plus one stylesheet. Copy it into your templates directory and the pages are there. There is nothing to install and no build step to add.

What do I need to already have?

A Java application that renders one of the four formats. That is all. The stylesheet ships ready to use, so you do not need Node or a build step.

Formats

Which format should I take?

Whichever your app already renders. You get all four either way, so the decision is reversible and you can change your mind later without purchasing anything again.

Are the formats really different, or is it the same file renamed?

Genuinely different. Static markup already works in every engine, so a version with no binding would be worth nothing. The Thymeleaf edition carries th:each and th:if, the FreeMarker one carries list and if directives, and the JTE one is typed. Every one is validated to render the same page before it goes on sale.

Do you support Groovy, Mustache, or something else?

Not today. Every format we add is one we maintain for every template forever, so we would rather do four properly than six badly. Tell us what you render with; a new format lands across the whole shelf at once when it does.

Paying

Can I use it on more than one project?

Yes. Unlimited projects, on both the single purchase and the subscription. The licence is per developer, not per site.

What happens if I cancel?

Cancelling ends the renewal, not the subscription. Access runs to the end of the term you already paid for, however many days of it are left. After that, subscription templates leave your library, their updates stop, and they cannot go into new projects. Projects that already use them stay licensed, so you can keep running and maintaining them. Anything you purchased outright stays, forever, with its updates.

To cancel, use Manage subscription on your account page. It opens Stripe's billing page. You can resume there too, until the term ends.

What counts as an update?

Every future version, major ones included. A template you purchased gets every one we release, and a subscription gets them while it runs. Downloading again always gets the latest, and every download carries a CHANGELOG.md that says what changed. A patch or a minor version never renames or removes a page or a field. When an updated page needs a field your model does not have yet, the changelog says which.

Why is the subscription cheaper than one template?

Because they are different things. $29.99 purchases one template permanently. $49.99 a month rents the whole shelf and everything added while you are subscribed. If you want one template and will never want another, purchasing it is the better deal and we would rather say so.

What if it is not right?

Email us within 30 days of the charge and we refund it in full. Any charge: a template, a first month, a renewal. No questions asked. If you tell us what was wrong, the reply is what makes the next template better, but it is never a condition. The address is under Refunds in the terms.

The awkward ones

Why pay when a model could generate this?

It could, and you would be right to ask. Generation stopped being the hard part a while ago. What did not get commoditised is taste, and neither did a decision somebody made well and then maintained. Generating one page is easy; generating eight that look like the same person designed them, with the empty state and the error state agreeing with each other, is not. The longer answer is on the About page.

What happens to my templates if Pressworks disappears?

The files are on your disk, so anything you downloaded keeps working in your app whatever happens to us. A purchased licence does not expire, and projects built while you were subscribed stay licensed. What you would lose is the updates and anything new. That is a real risk with a small shop and we would rather say it than let you find out.

Is there a free trial?

Better than one. Veriport, Oxbow, Fairday and Longhand are free with an account, in full, in all four formats, with no card and no expiry. Put it in your app and judge the typesetting for yourself. If it does not hold up, the rest of the shelf will not either.

Can my team use one subscription?

Not yet. The licence is per developer and there is no team plan today. If you need seats, say so and we will build it properly rather than pretending the current one covers you.

Can I ask for a template?

Yes. Say what kind of site you need under Request a template on your account page. A free account is enough, once you confirm its address. We read every request and it helps us decide what to make next, but we cannot promise to build any one of them.

Not answered here?

Start with the free ones and see for yourself. They cost nothing and answer most of these faster than we can.
